Dreamy Effect in Photoshop, Bonus included

This tutorial is to create a dreamy like effect on an image -- preferably a realistic one. At the end there is a bonus on how to make an image taken during the day look like night.

Step One. Open any photo that you would like to apply a "dreamy" effect to.

Step Two. Make sure your layers window is visible. If not press F7.

Step Three. If your layer says "Index" change it to RGB by going to Image > Mode > RGB.

Make sure your layers window is open

Step Four Now right click on "Layer 1" and click "Duplicate Layer".
Duplicate your original layer

Step Five. Making sure "Layer 1 copy" is selected, go Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur

Step Six. Set the Radius to 20 pixels and click ok. There is no fixed amount for this so mess around with this after you complete the tutorial if you'd like.
Use Gaussian with preferred settings

Step Seven. Now, still on Layer 1 copy, find the drop down menu next to "Opacity:" where it says "Normal". This is the layer mode. Select "Lighten" from the list.
Select Lighten Mode

Step Eight. Wow, we are already starting to get a dreamy look. One last step. Duplicate the "Layer 1 Copy" layer like we did in step 4 to layer 1 and this time change the layer mode to "Linear Light" and set the Opacity to 30%. Again, mess around with the settings until desired effect.

Duplicate, change layer mode, and set opacity

Step Nine. We are now done! Save the image and be on your way. Final result:

Bonus Instructions. To make the image appear like it was taken in the night follow up to steps 8 except instead of changing the mode to "Linear Light", change it to "Difference":
